On those roms where the patch will work and it's on, I get both roms failing with red bars, AND the extra ram test just explodes on the screen producing a lock up with graphics characters to look. Noticing something odd though and I'll do this more often with other roms too, but when the patch is disabled I get green bars in the self test. At least I'm not insane thinking that this rom should be running the SIO patch but it just might be that it can't because it's 600XL and so old to start with. The checksum is very weak - a 16-bit sum of all bytes - so it's possible to modify unused bytes to keep the checksum unchanged instead of modifying the checksum itself (although it may be tough if the checksum is too high). I know some games that definitely fail checks if the option byte in the upper ROM descriptor is modified. It's unclear why the checksum isn't fixed up instead, but there may be copy protection routines out there that check the checksum fields.
